ZANAMA Urges Private Sector Players to Support Government’s Agenda of Expanding Markets
Zambia National Marketeers Credit Association (ZANAMACA) has urged private sector players to support government’s agenda of building and expanding markets as well as bus stations across the country.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Association President Mupila Kameya noted that the country has about 3, 000 markets and only 10 percent of these are of good standard, while the rest require a facelift.
Mr. Kameya however said the Association is elated with government’s commitment to infrastructure development in the informal sector.
He said the Association expects government to continue building and refurbishing markets across the country in addition to the already existing infrastructure.
Government has signed 10 contracts for the construction of new markets and extension of bus stations in Eastern, North-Western, Southern and Western provinces at a cost of K166 million.
Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu, disclosed on Sunday that in Eastern Province, the infrastructure component for the improvement as well as extension of bus stations will include Chipata bus station at a cost of K42 million, Katete bus station at K21 million, Lundazi bus station at K24.3 million and Sinda bus station at K15 million.
“Government will spend about K6.3 million for the construction component of the completion of Namwala modern market in Namwala District,” Mr. Hamaundu said.
He added that Government will undertake the rehabilitation of Nakambala market in Mazabuka District of Southern Province, at a cost of K8.7 million and completion of Mpika bus station in Mpika district at K24.8 million.
