Ms. Mwamba stated that the local authority issued several notices and warnings to the owners of the illegal makeshift structures, but the lack of adherence necessitated the decisive action.

“The Lusaka City Council-LCC has evoked the Urban and Regional Planning Act No.3 of 2015 and demolished twelve (12) illegal makeshift stalls erected around Cross-Roads Mall along Leopards Hill Road.”

“The joint team of Lusaka City Council police and State Police undertook the demolition exercise which occurred in the early hours of today, 9th October, 2024. Despite our efforts to engage with the owners and provide ample time for compliance, the lack of adherence necessitated the decisive action,” Ms. Mwamba stated.

She added that the structures also posed significant safety and environmental hazards, obstructing motorists as well as pedestrian pathways and contribution to unsanitary conditions.

“As a Local Authority, we wish to categorically state our commitment in making sure that law, order and the correct procedure is followed in the setting up of any structure, including trading stalls and that this should be done in conformality with the Urban and Regional Planning Act, failure to which demolitions will be instituted,” she said.
