BuyZed Campaign Calls for Private Sector Investment in Coal-fired Power Stations
BuyZed Campaign has called for private sector investment in coal-fired power stations, leveraging incentives such as tax breaks, favorable tariffs, and streamlined regulatory processes.
Organization Founder Evans Ngoma told Money FM News that with the current shortage crippling economic growth and affecting livelihoods, exploring coal-generated energy is a viable solution.
Mr. Ngoma noted that coal is a reliable and consistent source of energy, providing a stable baseload power supply.
“With the current shortage crippling economic growth and affecting livelihoods, we propose exploring coal-generated energy as a viable solution. Rationale behind this is reliability, Coal is a reliable and consistent source of energy, providing a stable baseload power supply.”
“Exploring coal-generated energy can provide a reliable, sustainable, and economically beneficial solution to Zambia’s energy deficit. We urge policymakers and stakeholders to consider this proposal and work towards a comprehensive energy strategy that incorporates coal as a vital component of the energy mix,” Mr. Ngoma stated.
He further said the organization greatly appreciates Maamba Energy’s 300 Megawatts coal-fired power station which demonstrates the feasibility of coal-generated energy in Zambia.
“We are excited that Maamba Energy is expanding capacity to optimize economies of scale and increase power output. Coal mining and power generation can create jobs, stimulate local economies, and attract investment,” he added.
Mr. Ngoma also encouraged government to conduct thorough geological surveys to identify new coal deposits and assess their potential for power generation.
“We would like government to implement robust environmental impact assessments and mitigation measures to minimize coal mining and power generation’s ecological footprint.”
“After the additional coal-fired power stations are up and running can significantly boost Zambia’s energy supply,” Mr. Ngoma asserted.
