Lusaka City Council (LCC) has warned of stern action against any retail outlets or vendors found selling sachet beer popularly known as Tujilijili which has resurfaced on the market despite being banned.

The manufacturing and sale of sachet beer were banned and the ban remains in force due to its harmful effects on human health.

Council Assistant Public Relations Manager, Nyambe Bulumba said anyone who will be found wanting will face arrests, strict penalties, including fines and possible closure of their businesses.

“We have observed with concern that this beer has reappeared on the streets, contravening and violating the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011.”

“To this effect, the local authority has implemented measures to curb this illegal activity, ensuring the health of the public is protected at all costs,” Mr. Bulumba stated.

He said one of the measures in place is intensified patrols by Council police and public health officers to check on compliance levels.

“We wish to strongly warn that all those found in violation of the law will not be spared and will have no one to blame but themselves,” he warned.

He urged citizens to report any manufacturers or sellers they are aware of procuring this illegal beer to help the local authority to address the matter.

“The Local Authority remains committed to safeguarding the lives of members of the public, by ensuring that these harmful products are removed from the markets and streets,” he added.
