Ndola Magistrate Court has fined Neelkanth Metals Limited, based in Masaiti on the Copperbelt ,K900, 000 for illegally handling and acquiring copper scrap metal.

Mr. Maumbi said Ndola Chief Resident Magistrate has ruled that if the payment is not made by 4th November, 2024, a warrant of distress will be issued, allowing authorities to seize assets in order to recover the fines.
“Additionally, 4, 026 kilograms of seized cables and transformer windings have been forfeited to the state and returned to ZESCO, helping to recover public infrastructure lost to vandalism.”
“This marks a significant step in Zambia s efforts to combat infrastructure related crimes,” Mr. Maumbi stated.
He added that ZESCO Security began investigations on Neelkanth Metals in August 2024, following reports of the company’s receipt of vandalized copper.
“On October 3, 2024, a search uncovered 4, 026 kilograms of copper, including stripped cables and transformer windings, inside a welded -shut container.”
“Investigations confirmed the company lacked a scrap metal dealer’s license, failed to keep transaction records, and held no clearance certificate. Receipts presented by Neelkanth were found insufficient to confirm lawful ownership,” he explained.
