Luangwa Council Officially Hands Over Construction Site for Modern Market Project at K3.8 Million

Luangwa Town Council says it has officially handed over the construction site for the Kavula Modern Market project to the contractor which be done at a cost of K3.8 million.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Council Director of Engineering Mainda Mudenda, expressed concern over previous delays, noting that the initial contractor had failed to make progress, leading to the project’s termination.

Mr. Mudenda stated that the project, which is being funded under the 2024 Feira Constituency Development Fund (CDF), is one of the largest community initiatives in Luangwa District this year.
He emphasized that the Council expects high-quality work from the new contractor, Wegos General Dealers Limited, given the significance of the Kavula Modern Market to the local community, stressing the importance of consistent workmanship to ensure the completion of a high-standard facility.



“This new market facility is expected to significantly improve the local economy and provide modern trading spaces for all business owners in the district,” he stated.

Mr. Mudenda urged the contractor to engage local youths, particularly those trained in bricklaying under CDF sponsorship, in the project.

“This would further develop their skills and represent a significant milestone for the district,” Mr. Mudenda added.

Meanwhile, Area Councilors and the Ward Committee Chairperson were encouraged to monitor the project’s progress on behalf of the community, as they are included in the plans for the modern market.
And speaking on behalf of Wegos General Dealers Limited, Chongo Kabwe has assured the Council that the construction will begin this week and is completed within four months.

Mr. Kabwe committed to delivering exceptional work, with the project expected to be completed within four months.

The contractor has previously worked on the completion of the Chiendende Bridge and the Janeiro Foot Bridge.
