Zambia’s 96th Agricultural and Commercial Show Records 7% Increase in Participation

Zambia’s Agricultural and Commercial Show serves as an essential platform for showcasing the nation’s agricultural potential and promoting economic development.

The event brings together Exhibitions from various sectors, including farmers, agribusinesses, investors, and policymakers, to foster collaborations, knowledge exchange, networking, business opportunities, and drive innovation in the industry.

Hosted by the Agricultural and Commercial Cooperative Society Zambia, this annual event is an opportunity for industry leaders from the global agricultural industry to gather insights into market trends, consumer preferences, industry developments, and the competitive landscape.

The 96th Agricultural and Commercial Show which was held from 31st July 2024 to 5th August 2024 under the theme “Creating a Competitive Future.”

According to the Agricultural and Commercial Cooperative Society, about K20 Million was spent to organize this year’s Show.

Despite the devastating effects of climate change on businesses and the economy at large, this year’s show has seen a 7% increase in participation, with 1,405 exhibitors from 18 countries, including China, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye, graced the 96th Zambia Agriculture and Commercial Show, recognizing agriculture’s critical role in economic growth and addressing global environmental and food security issues owing to climate change.

President Ndayishimiye applauded the show for fostering global collaboration and noted agreements on agricultural autonomy, livestock management, and trade.

In his opening remarks, President Hakainde Hichilema noted that this year’s theme, “Creating Competitiveness,” is crucial for fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, driving economic development, and stimulating job creation.

And Zambia Agriculture and Commercial Show Society, President Dr. Bernard Moonga, said this significant economic event, held annually since 1914, reflects Zambia’s resilience and commitment to industrial development.

On the other hand, Joseph Mwale, a smallholder farmer from Solwezi district, who has been adding value to sweet potatoes, onion and ginger, by processing into potato flakes, was one of the Exhibitors, at the Show.

Mr. Mwale’s enterprise has empowered about 20 farmers in the district by buying crops from them, to meet the demand for the products on the local market.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Mwale reveals that his business greatly benefited from the Agricultural and Commercial show because about 100 boxes of sweet potato flakes which were selling at K60 per pack, were completely sold out on the fourth day and he had to bring in more on the fifth day, due to high demand for the product.

Next year’s 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show will be held under the theme: “Adapting to Climate Change,” allowing exhibitors ample preparation time.
