ERB Attributes Fuel Shortage to Cross Border Logistical Challenges

Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has attributed the shortage of fuel in various parts of the country to cross border logistical challenges specifically, persistent congestion at the port of Beira.

Board Manager-Public Relations, Namukolo Kasumpa said the congestion is likely to worsen as the Government of Mozambique has declared today 9th October, 2024 as a public holiday to allow citizens to participate in the general elections, a move which is expected to cause further delays in loading petroleum products.

Mrs. Kasumpa further stated that the introduction of a new customs law in Zimbabwe has prompted fuel transporters to suspend imports through that country, resulting in challenges at the Chanida Border Post and extended transit time due to increased routing distance.

She revealed that ERB has since temporarily relaxed the movement restrictions for Petroleum Road Tank Vehicles, and extended the operating hours to 05:00 to 22:00hrs, from the previous 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours, in a bid to increase fuel delivery efficiency and alleviate shortages.

“During the stated period, the ERB urges transporters to adhere to all necessary safety and regulatory procedures that ensure safe passage of fuel during the extended operating hours,” Mrs. Kasumpa stated.

Mrs. Kasumpa has since advised consumers to avoid panic buying as the Board will continue to provide oversight and monitor fuel stocks countrywide.
