Government Assures Cotton Industry Players of Protection

Eastern Province Minister says government is making strides to protect the most vulnerable players in the cotton industry.

Speaking during the World Cotton Day celebrations at Chief Kathumba’s Farm in Sinda district, Eastern Province, Peter Phiri says government has pledged to support initiatives promoting fair pricing, access to quality seeds, and market linkages in the cotton sector.

Mr. Phiri states that Government aims to create a value chain where all stakeholders can prosper.
At the same event, traditional leaders have expressed concern over low cotton prices that are hindering production.

Chieftainess Kawaza has attributed low cotton production to poor prices, emphasizing the need to strengthen laws protecting farmers from exploitation.

And Eastern and Southern Cotton Organisation (EASCO) Chairperson Driana Lwanda says regional integration and policy collaboration are key to boosting cotton production.

Meanwhile, Cotton Board of Zambia Chief Executive Officer Sunduzwayo Banda has highlighted the urgency of addressing industry challenges, including unfair pricing.

This year’s commemoration of the World Cotton Day was held under the theme: “Cotton for Good: Empowering Communities through Sustainable Cotton Farming.”
