Police Formally Arrest Former Kasama MP for Obtaining US$80,000 in Gold Scam
Zambia Police Service has formally arrested former Kasama Member of Parliament, Kelvin Sampa for obtaining US$80,000 by false pretenses, possession of counterfeit notes, and paper or implements intended for forgery.
Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga said in the first count, Mr. Sampa, who is also a UPND Member, jointly and whilst acting together with Martin Mabo and other individuals yet to be identified, allegedly obtained US$80,000 from a Japanese national, identified as Satoshi Sakamoto, falsely claiming that the money would be used to assist the owner in purchasing refined gold within Zambia, when in fact not.
Mr. Hamoonga revealed that in the second Count, Mr. Sampa was further found in possession of 49 counterfeit US$4,900, which was being presented as genuine when it was not.
“Additionally, Mr. Sampa was found with paper intended to resemble special paper used in the manufacturing of currency notes. This paper, along with other implements for forgery, was intended for illegal use to produce counterfeit currency.”
“The offences are alleged to have been committed between June and September 2024 within Lusaka District, Lusaka Province. These offences are contrary to Sections: 309, 370(c), and 351 of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.”
“Mr. Kelvin Mutale Sampa has since been formally arrested and charged for the aforementioned offences. He will appear in court soon,” Mr. Hamoonga stated.
He urged Members of the public to be cautious when engaging in financial transactions and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
