EXTENDING OPERATING HOURS OF DIESEL GENERATORS WOULD REQUIRE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

ZESCO Limited says calls by traders at Lusaka’s Chilenje market for the utility to extend operating hours of the diesel generator, beyond 8 hours would require additional resources, which may not be sustainable given the current power constraints.

Responding to a press query by Money FM News, ZESCO Spokesperson, Matongo Maumbi said government and the utility are making significant efforts to manage the situation and provide the best possible service under the current challenging circumstances.

Mr. Maumbi added that an eight-hour supply is considered standard business hours, as it allows marketeers to conduct essential activities during the most critical times of the day.

“As ZESCO, we acknowledge the concerns of the Chilenje marketeers regarding the limited operating hours of the diesel generator. However, it is important to understand that the country is currently facing a critical power shortage.”

“Expanding generator use beyond these hours would require additional resources, which may not be sustainable given the current power constraints,” Mr. Maumbi stated.

He encouraged businesses and the public to explore alternative energy solutions and implement energy efficiency measures wherever possible.

“ZESCO remains committed to finding long-term solutions to the power supply challenges the country is facing,” he added.

Some marketeers at Chilenje market in Lusaka are calling on ZESCO to consider extending operating hours of the diesel generator beyond the current 8 hours.

ZESCO has procured 23 generators which are being installed at markets, healthcare facilities, and selected schools to ensure continuous power supply amid the ongoing energy crisis.
